Pistachios are often contaminated with mold
If stored incorrectly, aflatoxins form on the pistachio nuts. These are fungal toxins that are mainly found in the mold Aspergillus flavus. They are harmful to dogs but also to humans and can result in serious health problems.
Dogs react to the mold more than humans.
Many of the imported pistachios show very high levels of aflatonins.
Pistachios harmful but not deadly
Mold poisoning from pistachios is usually not fatal, but sensitive dogs can react with liver problems and gastrointestinal disorders.
Most dogs don't mind if they occasionally pinch a few pistachios. However, regular consumption is not recommended.
