The ornamental quince, also called false quince, is one of the slow-growing shrubs. It therefore only needs to be cut a little. You should be careful when doing this so that you don't accidentally remove the flower-bearing branches.

Ornamental quinces only flower on perennial wood

Japanese and Chinese ornamental quinces only develop flowers and later fruit on branches that are at least three years old. The first pruning is therefore only after the third year after planting.

No flowers are formed on one- and two-year-old shoots. When pruning, be careful about which branches you cut.

With older plants, it is usually sufficient if you only use the scissors every three years.

Cut back after flowering

A good time to cut back the quince is right after flowering. Remove the shoot tips and any branches that grow inward.

One and two-year-old shoots should only be removed if they are far too dense or protrude from the bush.

When pruning, remember that your ornamental quince will not flower, or only very little, in the coming years if you have removed too many young shoots.

Care cut in autumn

When trimming in the fall, remove all:

  • withered branches
  • Very old shoots
  • shoot tips
  • Branches growing across the shrub

The cut is made directly on the branch or near the ground.

The taper cut

If the quince is very overgrown, a rejuvenation cut will help it to bloom again. Please note, however, that the ornamental quince will have fewer flowers in the coming year.

To rejuvenate, cut about a third of all shoots. Above all, inward growing branches must be removed.

Cut shoot tips

Regularly shorten the shoot tips of the ornamental quince. This will make the shrub bushier and denser. You can cut back shoot tips at any time and use them in early summer to propagate cuttings.

Since most ornamental quince varieties are very thorny, you should always work with leather work gloves to avoid injury.

tips and tricks

When planting a wild fruit hedge made of quince, sea buckthorn, sloe and other wild shrubs, you can do without cutting altogether. Here you only have to shorten if the hedge spreads too much.
