Since the mango tree originally comes from the tropics, it is not hardy and does not tolerate frost. He loves the warmth and high humidity. It is therefore not suitable for growing in the garden.

However, mango trees can be planted in tubs and then beautify your balcony or terrace in the summer months. However, you are only allowed to stay outside overnight when the ice saints are over and the temperatures no longer drop below 15 °C. He doesn't like cold wind at all. For the winter, your mango tree needs a bright and reasonably warm place.

How do you overwinter a mango tree?

Your mango tree prefers to overwinter in summer temperatures and high humidity. If it is still small, it is best to place it in the kitchen or in the bathroom. There he finds an almost ideal climate. The older he gets, the better he tolerates cooler times. Then it may become too big for these rooms too and you will have to look for another winter place for it.

From the second year your mango tree can overwinter in the conservatory or in the heated greenhouse. But here, too, the temperatures should not drop below 15 °C. Make sure your mango tree gets enough light. If the room is too dark, provide artificial lighting. You may create so-called daylight lamps for this purpose, which provide ideal light for plants.

If your mango tree winters cool, then water it a little less than in summer. It will also need less fertilizer because it will not grow as quickly. If, on the other hand, it is warm, at temperatures above 20 °C, then water and fertilize your mango tree just as you would in summer.

The most important wintering tips:

  • Temperatures of at least 15 °C
  • water sufficiently
  • fertilize less at lower temperatures
  • high humidity
  • bright room

tips and tricks

The warmer your mango tree winters, the more fertilizer and irrigation water it needs.
