Pomegranate is eaten in this country as a winter fruit. Ripe pomegranates can be stored at room temperature for several weeks and in the fridge for several months. The skin dries up a bit, but the juicy seeds stay fresh.

Storage of whole fruits
The main season for pomegranates ends in December, and you can occasionally still buy stock from Turkey into February. Nevertheless, you don't have to do without the delicious and healthy pomegranate seeds in the months that follow. Since the robust fruits no longer ripen after harvesting, they can be stored without any problems, without losing their freshness and quality:
- at room temperature for several weeks,
- in the refrigerator (vegetable compartment) for several months.
Before long-term storage, the fruit should be carefully checked for soft spots. These can indicate possible rotting inside. It is better to store only impeccable specimens whose shell is intact and elastic. During storage, the shell dries up more and more, but the juicy interior underneath remains intact. The stored pomegranates should be checked occasionally for damage.
Storage of opened fruit
As with any fruit, it is advisable to eat the fresh pomegranate seeds immediately after opening the fruit. If you haven't found a use for the 400 or so juicy seeds, the opened fruit can be kept in the dark at around 7° C for a few days. To do this, wrap them in cling film or keep the detached seeds in a covered container in the refrigerator.
tips and tricks
Ripe pomegranates do not necessarily have to look red on the outside. Rather, the color of the shell depends on the variety offered. The coloring ranges from bright red to yellow-brownish.
