Basically, the year-round stay of bay laurel outdoors in Central Europe is only possible in extremely sheltered locations and with appropriate winter protection. In mild locations, however, it is sometimes even possible to plant a laurel hedge.

Choose the right location
As a plant originally from the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, the laurel (Laurus nobilis) has certain requirements for its location:
- sandy, well drained soil
- a lot of sun
- warm and if possible no ground frost
When growing in a pot on the balcony, regular watering is particularly important when it comes to care.
Choose the right distance when planting a hedge
In contrast to the often confused and sprawling cherry laurel, the real laurel can be planted relatively close together at a distance of about half a meter between the individual laurel bushes. For a dense hedge, laterally protruding shoots can then be cut off and placed between the existing laurel plants as cuttings for propagation purposes.
tips and tricks
With the real laurel, different plants from seeds or from cuttings propagation can be quite close together in one pot. For a hedge planting, a distance of about 50 centimeters between the individual plants is recommended.
