Vervain is considered undemanding. Nevertheless, the seeds should not just be scattered in the garden or in the balcony box in passing and left to their own devices. Then you can hope and wait for success for a long time…

The right time for sowing

Verbena can be sown outdoors from the end of April to mid-June. If you prefer it on the window sill at home, you can start with it from February and by April at the latest.

Preculture: From seed to seedling

Once you have obtained the seeds, follow these steps:

  • Fill the seed tray with nutrient-poor substrate
  • Press seeds into the soil and cover a maximum of 5 mm with soil (light germinators)
  • Moisten vigorously with water from a plant spray bottle
  • put in a warm place (temperature of 20 °C)
  • keep moist over the next few weeks
  • after 12 to 20 days the seedlings appear

Outdoors, when sowing or pricking out, you should keep a distance of 25 to 30 cm between the individual verbena plants. If the verbena is to grow in the pot, it should be deep enough, as the plant develops long roots.

Then: the right choice of location

After the ice saints in May, the verbena can be planted out or moved to the balcony. The choice should be placed on a sunny location. Alternatively, a partially shaded location can be chosen. But be careful: the sunnier it is, the bigger and more floriferous the verbena will be. In general, the pitch should be in a location protected from the wind.

In order to keep the later care effort low, it is advisable to pay attention to the substrate. The soil should be well drained so that no waterlogging can form. A lean to moderately nutritious and humus-rich substrate with a dry to moist environment is also advantageous.

tips and tricks

Once the verbena plants have reached a height of 8 cm, you should pinch them. As a result, they branch out better.
