For the ambitious hobby gardener, it is a matter of honor to sow your own herbs. Thanks to the robust constitution of sage seeds, the project succeeds both on the windowsill and directly in the bed. We explain here what is important.

Sowing behind glass - this is how sage starts vitally into herbal life

When the days get longer from the end of March, there is a lot of activity on the windowsills. Now the light conditions invite you to sow so that sage can start the season in May with a vital growth advantage. It's so easy to sow the seeds:

  • Fill small pots with peat sand, emaciated herbal soil or commercial seed soil
  • Press 1 or 2 seeds about 1 centimeter deep into the substrate and sieve thinly
  • Moisten with water from a spray bottle or water from below
  • Place a pane of glass, cover with cling film or place in the greenhouse

The first cotyledons will break out of the seeds within 7 to 21 days on a warm, partially shaded window seat. The transparent hood has then fulfilled its task and falls away. During this time, keep the substrate slightly moist and air the cover daily until planting out in mid-May.

This is how direct sowing succeeds

When the temperatures rise at the beginning of May, experienced hobby gardeners sow sage seeds that are as fresh as possible in the bed. Ideally, the chosen location is sunlit, warm and sheltered. In order for the plants to happily take root, they prefer a nutritious, humus-rich and loamy-sandy soil. Follow these steps:

  • Rake the bed deeply, weed it and work it into fine crumbs
  • Enhance sandy soil with compost, optimize soil that is too heavy with sand
  • Sow sage seeds at a distance of 30-40 centimeters and a row spacing of 50 centimeters
  • A sowing depth of 1 to 1.5 centimeters is considered ideal

After the seedbed has been gently sprinkled with water, a garden fleece serves as protection against cold nights and pecking birds. A week after sowing, care work should begin, which consists of regular watering and weeding.

tips and tricks

Sage plants grown indoors should not be suddenly confronted with blazing sunshine. The same applies to bought young plants. Allow your youngsters a few days in partial shade to acclimatize before planting them in their final location.
