Sage scores with a colorful range of uses as a culinary herb, medicinal, scented and ornamental plant. This spectrum cannot be covered by a single specimen. How good that the Mediterranean all-rounder is so easy to propagate.

In this way, the cuttings can be propagated in no time at all
As an evergreen subshrub, sage is predestined for propagation by cuttings. If the plant is full of juice in summer, this is the best time. How to do it right:
- From July, cut off the top cuttings with a length of 6-10 centimeters
- Remove the bottom leaves leaving 2 pairs of leaves
- Fill the growing pots (€16.68) with a mixture of herbal soil and sand and moisten
- Insert one cutting deep enough that the pairs of leaves can be seen
Put your little ones in a greenhouse or put a transparent hood over them. Within 2-3 weeks the rooting is so advanced that the young sage can be planted out in the bed or pot. It is important to note that the substrate must never dry out.
Multiply sage by lowering - that's how it works
In early summer, select a healthy, vital and non-lignified shoot. Pull it to the ground and mark the point of contact. A small furrow is made there and the sinker is covered with earth and, if necessary, a stone. The tip of the shoot looks out of the ground and is tied to a wooden stick. Follow these steps:
- The mother plant takes care of the sinker while it roots
- Keep the soil constantly moist without causing waterlogging
- If the tip sprout again, an independent root system has formed
The growth of new roots will be accelerated if you scratch the shoot with a razor blade before digging it in. In the end, the connection between mother plant and offshoot can be severed with a sharp knife cut. Planted at the new location, a vital young sage develops in the same year.
This is how the offspring succeeds by sowing
To avoid the imponderables of direct sowing, we recommend sowing sage on the windowsill. This has the advantage that the early young plants start the season with a stable growth advantage. How to do it right:
- At the end of March, fill the seed pots with peat sand or emaciated herb soil
- Press 1-2 sage seeds about 1 centimeter deep into the substrate in each pot
- Spray with water and place in the heatable mini greenhouse (€7.95).
At 18 to 22 degrees Celsius, you can look forward to the first seedlings within 7 to 21 days. During this time, keep the substrate slightly moist. In mid-May, plant the young sage in the bed at a distance of 30-40 centimeters.
tips and tricks
Can't get enough of the wonderful sage scent? Then smoke the dried leaves in a warmer or in a fire bowl. Once the blazing flame has turned into a glowing ember, put the smoked food on.
