Every sage seed contains the concentrated vitality of an impressive herbal plant. Anyone who wants to experience the cycle of life in all stages harvests and sows the seeds with their own hands. We explain how to do it on the windowsill and in the bed.

Autumn time is harvest time for seeds - this is how it works

If a sage bush is allowed to flower, it invests all of its energy in the growth of fruits and seeds. When autumn is just around the corner, the blossoms are completely withered. Now the ripe Klausen fruits with the coveted seeds are hidden behind them. How to harvest seeds:

  • Cut off the inflorescences on a dry day
  • Using a fine-mesh sieve, use your fingers to remove the flowers and seed pods from each stalk
  • Sieve the flower-seed mixture until the pure seed remains

After the sage seeds have been allowed to dry for 1-2 days, they are stored in a dark, airtight container until sowing.

Sowing on the windowsill - that's how it works

At the end of March or beginning of April, take out the seeds and let them soak in water or chamomile tea for a few hours. Sowing continues in these steps:

  • Small seed pots (€16.68) fill with seed soil or peat sand
  • Plant 1 or 2 sage seeds 1 to 1.5 centimeters deep
  • Sieve thinly with sand over the substrate and moisten

Germination takes 7 to 21 days on a warm, partially shaded window sill. The seed soil must not dry out during this time.

Simple and efficient - direct sowing

If the thermometer permanently exceeds the 10 degree mark from the beginning of May, the seedbed is prepared in the sunny location. Thorough weeding and fine tillage set the course for rapid germination. Finely sieved compost optimizes soil that is too sandy, while soil that is too dense is improved with sand.

Sow the individual sage seeds 30-40 centimeters apart and 1.5 centimeters deep. After the bed has been watered with a fine spray, a garden fleece serves as protection against delayed ground frosts and voracious pests.

tips and tricks

Don't be surprised if the self-harvested sage seeds turn into a completely different plant than the mother plant. Only the seeds of pure species result in a plant with exactly the same attributes of its ancestors when sown. If you want to be on the safe side, buy certified seeds from specialist retailers.
