A single plant has passed the test and now you want to create a whole bed of lady's mantle? In addition to buying new plants, there are cheaper methods of doing this. Here is an overview of the best propagation methods.

The most proven method: dividing the rootstock

The easiest way to propagate lady's mantle is by dividing its rootstock. This vegetative propagation is best done in spring, when the plant has not yet sprouted freshly.

Here's how to do it:

  • Dig up lady's mantle
  • Roughly remove soil from roots, e.g. B. Shake off soil
  • Divide the roots with a sharp knife
  • be careful not to damage the fine fiber roots
  • Plant the newly acquired plant in a suitable location

Self-sowing - Now the lady's mantle takes over the direction

If you prefer to leave the reproduction to nature, you can trust the lady's mantle. He likes to multiply by self-sowing. If its withered inflorescences are not removed after its flowering period, seeds will quickly emerge. These are spread around the garden by the wind and begin to germinate the following spring.

Wanted sowing: This is how it works!

If you want to do the sowing yourself, you can prefer the seeds of the lady's mantle at home or sow them directly. It should be noted that they must experience a cold spell in order to be awakened from their sleep.

Either you wait until spring and then pick up the seeds, or you take the seeds and put them on the balcony over the winter, for example, or in the freezer for several days. Provided you want to germinate the seeds at home. For direct sowing, the seeds can be sown outdoors between October and January.

The seeds germinate in the light and should not be covered with soil or covered subtly. After sowing, the soil is kept moist. The cotyledons can be seen after two to three weeks… As soon as the plantlets have reached a size of 5 cm, they can be pricked out and/or relocated. The optimal location is half-shady and has loamy soil rich in humus.

tips and tricks

If you want to prevent the lady's mantle from spreading all over the garden by self-sowing, you should cut off the inflorescences after they wither. This prevents seed formation.
