Hardly any herb is as easy to sow and care for as real chamomile. In nature, the plant thrives on the poorest soil - the main thing is that it can soak up as much sun and heat as possible. Chamomile, which blooms profusely with distinctive white-yellow flowers, is also an ornament in the home garden, especially since it can be put to good use. You can find out how real chamomile is sown in the following article.

The optimal time

In principle, the very fine seeds of chamomile can be spread both in early autumn and in spring. The advantage of sowing in autumn is that in most cases the harvest in the following year will be larger than with plants that are only sown in spring. The autumn sowing should take place between mid-August and the end of September, the resulting plants usually survive the winter without any problems. Spring sowing is to be carried out from the beginning of May, but this should not be followed by a cold period.

Sow chamomile

Although the very fine seeds of real chamomile can be sown directly into the bed, there is a risk that they will simply be blown away. Chamomile is one of the light germinators, which is why the seeds should only be pressed against the soil, but not covered by it. For this reason, growing from seeds is often quite difficult. However, you can work around the problem by simply dropping the flower heads on the ground in autumn - this will happen automatically, all you have to do is wait. After all, chamomile reproduces naturally in this way. During the propagation period, the chamomile bed should be kept free of any weeds so that the plants have enough space and air to grow.

Prepare chamomile in the pot

From around the beginning of March it is possible to sow seeds and thus to grow chamomile in pots. In this way, you elegantly solve the problem of the cold snaps that often occur in May, which have an unfavorable effect on the germination and growth of camomile seedlings. Use potting soil or herb soil and place the pot in a light and warm location, keeping the substrate moist with a spray bottle - but not wet. The young plants are transplanted into the bed or into a larger tub in May.

tips and tricks

You can also use conventional potting soil for sowing in pots, although this should be enriched with garden lime (€9.70).
