In order for a clematis to develop its massive biomass with dense foliage and magnificent flowering, it needs a sufficient amount of nutrients. The following instructions explain how to fertilize clematis properly.

Organic special fertilizers satisfy the great hunger of clematis

Flowering climbing plants, such as clematis, have a particularly high need for potassium. In order to meet this requirement, the specialist trade offers special fertilizers for clematis on an organic-mineral basis. The following two preparations have particularly stood out in this regard:

Cuxin DCM

This preparation scores with a composition of 6 percent nitrogen, 5 percent phosphorus and a whopping 10 percent potassium. In this way, the fertilizer aims for a long-lasting flowering of the climber. The mineral components ensure that the nutrients are available quickly. The granulated fertilizer is used from March to September at a dosage of 100-150 grams per square meter.

Kölle's Best Clematis Fertilizer

Here the manufacturer relies on an NPK composition of 6+3+8 and adds 5 percent guano (€121.99). Guano consists of the excrement of South American seabirds and is rich in natural nutrients for the targeted activation of soil life. One application each in March/April and June/July with 70-100 grams per square meter is recommended. Clematis in the tub receives 20 grams every 4 weeks from March to August in the moist substrate.

Clematis fertilize in harmony with nature

In the near-natural garden, ecologically oriented hobby gardeners avoid using any mineral additives in the fertilizer. In order to fertilize the clematis in a balanced way according to this principle, a combination of compost and plant manure is recommended. How to handle it correctly:

  • Begin with the application of fertilizer in the second year, provided that the clematis was planted with starter fertilizer
  • From March to September, every 8-14 days, work the ripening compost and bark humus into the soil
  • Spray the soil alternately every 8-14 days with potassium-rich comfrey liquid manure
  • Alternatively, use a combination of nettle and comfrey manure as an organic fertilizer
  • If the pH value is below 5.5, fertilize with vital lime in the spring

It is important to note that after the application of any type of fertilizer, the soil must be watered to absorb the nutrients. Plant slurry is always diluted with water at a ratio of 1:10 before it is used. Wetting the leaves of a clematis with liquid fertilizer should be avoided so as not to open the door to the fungal spores of clematis wilt.

tips and tricks

No garden but a hungry clematis on the balcony? Then a worm hotel supplies the required organic fertilizer in the form of vermicompost and worm tea. In a space-saving wooden construction, busy worms process the organic household waste into nutritious organic solid and liquid fertilizer on 4 levels.
