An overgrown, blooming privacy screen keeps prying eyes away in a decorative way. The climbing clematis is predestined for this task at the cozy seat in the garden or on the balcony. Here we explain in a practical way how easy the plan is to succeed.

Properly plant planters with climbing aids

To ensure that the clematis fulfills its task as a privacy screen, plant one or more specimens in a planter with an integrated climbing aid. This has the advantage of being flexible in use in the garden and on the balcony. A trellis in the form of a trellis provides the tendrils of the clematis with sufficient support. Choose a planter with a volume of 30-40 liters. How to proceed with planting:

  • Lay out a 5-8 centimeter high drainage made of gravel, grit (€46.95) or broken pottery over the bottom openings in the planter
  • Use a loose mix of garden soil, compost, leaf soil, sand and expanded clay (€19.73) as a substrate
  • Plant the potted clematis so deep that the bottom two pairs of buds are covered with substrate
  • Press the soil down with your hands and water generously

Since clematis value a shaded foot, spread bark mulch or pine soil in the planter afterwards. Alternatively, use small sub-plants, such as blue cushions or purple bells. Decorative balls also create a shading of the roots.

The most beautiful clematis for privacy protection

For privacy in the garden and on the balcony in the mobile planter, Clematis species and hybrids that thrive in the limited substrate volume come into consideration. Since they do not have a meter-high house wall to green, the following specimens with limited height growth are ideal:

  • Clematis alpina 'Ruby' reaches a maximum height of 250 centimeters
  • Clematis viticella 'Little Butterfly', the Italian clematis with the compact growth and dainty pink flowers
  • Rose Clematis 'Ashva' shines at a height of 120-180 cm with light purple flowers well into autumn

In order for the clematis to climb up the trellis, it only needs a little help at the beginning. Secure the lower vines to the struts with soft tie material.

tips and tricks

If the property is surrounded by a high fence made of narrow wooden struts or wires, the clematis with its tendrils transforms the fence into a green leafy and summery blooming privacy screen in no time at all. The ideal solution for hobby gardeners who value privacy not only selectively but throughout the property.
