If the dreamlike Clematis Hof keeps in the garden and on the balcony, hobby gardeners want more specimens. The following instructions explain the propagation of your most beautiful clematis in a practical way. This is how it works with sinkers and cuttings.

Instructions for the lowering method

The time window for propagation by sinkers is open from March to August. This method of breeding is very popular with hobby gardeners because it is so uncomplicated:

  • Fill a pot with potting soil and dig in at ground level next to the clematis
  • Lower a semi-lignified shoot down to the substrate
  • Where the vine touches the ground, defoliate and score lightly with a razor
  • Cover the drive part thinly with soil and fix it with a hook
  • Stick a bamboo stick into the substrate to attach the shoot tip to it with bast

While a new root system forms on the tendril, the substrate must not dry out. Give the mother plant time until next spring for this form of propagation. Then cut off the shoot with a sharp knife and hold a new clematis in your hands.

Instructions for the cutting method

The propagation of a clematis with cuttings is also very popular, because in this way the offspring of varietal plants succeeds. The clematis is in full bloom in the summer this is the best time. Follow these steps:

  • The best cuttings for propagation thrive in the center of a clematis
  • With a sharp knife, cut head cuttings with a length of 12-15 centimeters
  • Start the cut just below a knot
  • Defoliate each offshoot except for a pair of leaves at the top
  • Dip the lower cut in rooting powder

Fill 12 cm pots with lean potting soil and insert one cutting deep enough that only the pair of leaves is still sticking out. A transparent hood creates a warm, humid microclimate that promotes rooting. The chosen location for propagation should be semi-shady to shady, warm and protected.

Proper care during rooting

While the cuttings are busily rooting in the following weeks and months, the hood is aired daily for some time. Ideally, water your youngsters from below to prevent mold. For this purpose, the pots are placed in a bowl with a water level 5-10 centimeters high for a few minutes.

The capillary force transports the moisture into the substrate. If the substrate surface feels damp, the process is complete. The clematis only gets fertilizer when it has completely rooted through the pot and is planted out in the bed or bucket.

tips and tricks

Soil fatigue is a foreign word for clematis. Even after decades, the beautiful flowers do not require a change of location. Therefore, plant your propagated young plants without hesitation in locations where other clematis already felt comfortable. A break in cultivation of 4-5 years should only be taken if the clematis has already wilted there.
