Planted professionally, the site-loyal clematis thrives in the garden for many years. Therefore, give the planting process all gardening attention. Read here which aspects are important for vital growth of a clematis.

Best planting time starts in August
Clematis finds the ideal starting conditions in sun-warmed soil at temperatures of 14 to 22 degrees Celsius. We therefore recommend planting the young plants between August and October. In this way, the clematis start the next year well-rooted with an advantageous growth advantage.
The clematis feels at home in this location
As an excellent climber, the clematis favors a location where the tendrils are occasionally illuminated by the sun, while the roots lie in the shade. Clematis is therefore always shortlisted for greening facades facing south-west or west. Ideally, the soil is nutritious, humus and fresh and moist, without the risk of waterlogging.
Where the light and temperature conditions are right, but the soil leaves something to be desired, plant the clematis in a large bucket. From there, direct the tendrils to the appropriate climbing aid, if this is not already integrated.
This is how the perfect planting works
While the soil is being prepared, place the young plant that is still potted in a container of water. The more intensely the root ball is soaked, the easier it is to handle during planting. Follow these steps:
- Create a planting pit with 1.5 times the volume of the root ball
- Create a drainage at the bottom of the pit made of grit, (46.95€) pebbles or shards of pottery
- Plant the potted clematis so deep that 2 pairs of eyes are below the surface of the soil
- Insert the root ball at a slight angle, aligned with the climbing aid
The unusual planting depth makes sense for two reasons: Clematis forms a stronger root system. In addition, the eyes serve as a 'reserve'. If the tendrils are affected by the clematis wilt and die off, the clematis will happily sprout again the next year from the dormant buds.
tips and tricks
The large clematis family not only has beautiful climbing artists to offer. With the carpet clematis (Clematis x jouiniana) and the non-climbing perennial clematis (Clematis integrifolia) and their associated varieties, there are plenty of fantastically flowering ground covers to explore.
