Snowdrops like to settle in large numbers on entire lawns or proliferate under deciduous trees. Some gardeners plant them in the garden especially for them. Others grow snowdrops in pots. But what needs to be taken into account when it comes to maintenance?

Do you have to water snowdrops?

Snowdrops usually do not need to be watered. During their growing season between January and April, the weather is mostly humid. If this is not the case and the snowdrop is in a sunny position, for example, it must be supplied with water. Tap water can be used.

Furthermore, the soil should not dry out in summer. Since the snowdrop has already retired by this time, it may be forgotten. But the onion in the ground needs moist soil to survive. Therefore, when choosing a location, it is advisable to choose a place under deciduous trees that offer shade in summer.

Do snowdrops need fertilizer?

It is not necessary to fertilize snowdrops. If you still fertilize, you risk that many leaves will form but no flowers. Fertilizer can only be appropriate after many years. Potted snowdrops should be given liquid fertilizer during and shortly after flowering.

Is a pruning necessary?

  • Pruning is not compulsory
  • if necessary, remove the leaves when they have yellowed or dried up
  • do not cut the leaves too early: onions draw nutrients from them
  • usually leaves and stems will rot by themselves
  • if necessary, cut off wilted blossoms - seed formation requires strength
  • Cut for cut flowers: can be kept in a vase for up to 1 week

Should you rejuvenate snowdrops?

Over the years, snowdrops form large clumps. They owe this to their so-called brood onions. In order for each snowdrop to reach its full potential, it is advisable to separate the bulbs. The rejuvenation also serves to propagate when the onions are planted in other places.

Are snowdrops endangered by pests?

Snowdrops are not endangered for pest feeding. The reason: During their short growing season, most parasites hibernate or have not yet hatched. Pesticides can safely remain stored in the basement.
