Deutzia are highly valued in German gardens for their beautiful flower clusters. They are fairly undemanding and therefore also well suited as hedge plants. Especially low varieties make decorative small hedges in front gardens, on terraces or fences.

Create Deutzia hedges
If you are planning to create a hedge of Deutzia, you must be aware that such a hedge is not a permanent privacy screen. Deutzia are deciduous and appear slightly bare in winter.
Deutzia are available in very different heights. The growth height ranges from 80 centimeters to four meters. The smaller varieties are more suitable for hedges. It is better to plant large varieties individually as eye-catchers in the garden.
The ornamental shrubs are easy to propagate yourself. If you are already growing Deutzia in the garden, you only need to cut cuttings in summer.
prepare ground
Deutzia prefer sunny locations, permeable soils and nutritious soil. If there have already been Deutzia in the intended place, you should replace most of the soil beforehand, because the ornamental shrubs are not compatible with themselves.
- Mark the course of the hedge
- dig up earth
- Mix in mature compost or horn shavings (32.93€).
- Plant Deutzia
- Water
The best time to create a Deutzia hedge is either spring or autumn. Keep a planting distance that is about half the growth width that the shrub will reach.
Maintain Deutzia hedges
The hedge does not need much maintenance. Deutzia are slow-growing and only increase in height by between 20 and 45 centimeters a year. A deutzia hedge is therefore not very much work, because the annual pruning is not necessary. You should only cut off old branches as deeply as possible and thin out the bushes every two to three years.
If you want to encourage the shrubs to bloom, you can trim the shoots when the shrub has faded.
During the growing season you should ensure that the soil is moist enough and water regularly. A one-off application of fertilizer in the spring is also one of the recommended care measures.
tips
In the trade, the Deutzia is primarily offered as a hybrid. These varieties flower more profusely than the wild forms. However, they are only suitable as bee pasture to a limited extent.
