The above-ground parts of lilies withdraw over the winter. The underground bulb survives the winter in the ground to sprout again in spring. Should they be protected from ice and snow?

Why should lilies be overwintered?
Not all lily species are well hardy. In harsh locations, sensitive lilies such as callas should be protected in winter. Otherwise the onions could be damaged.
Protect lilies in the bed from frost
Precautions should be taken when planting. Place your lily in a sheltered spot. In winter you can protect as follows:
- cover with fir leaves, brushwood, straw or mulch (239.00€).
- Apply a layer of humus over the root area
- Dig up bulbs of sensitive species/varieties and overwinter
Overwinter onions indoors
After carefully and generously digging up the bulbs, they should be freed from soil. Now they can be overwintered in dry soil or sand in the basement, shed, garage or attic, for example. But be careful: all leaves and stem residue should be removed first. Otherwise there is a risk of mold.
Overwinter lilies in pots
Potted lilies should ideally be brought indoors. In the house they are placed in a cool place (5 to 15 °C). The soil should dry out and all above-ground plant parts are removed.
Prepare for wintering
- in a pot: keep out of the rain
- Cut away seeds or wilted flowers
- do not fertilize too late
- remove withered foliage (not before, as onions draw strength from them)
- share beforehand if necessary
tips and tricks
Most lilies tolerate cold. But if this is paired with wetness, you should be on the alert. Wetness means the imminent end of lilies.
