There are various methods of propagating the phlox. When dividing and propagating by cuttings, you get perennials that are identical to the mother plant. The self-collected seeds, on the other hand, are not varietal and will surely surprise you.

propagation by division
Not only can you sow phlox, you can also propagate it by dividing it. The best times for this are spring and autumn. Usually there are no problems with this. Simply divide the perennial with a spade and replant the sections. To ensure that they grow well and sprout, put a portion of well-rotted compost in the planting hole and water the plants well.
Propagation by cuttings
If you would like to plant cuttings, cut off the tips of the shoots that are at least 10 cm long and remove the lower leaves. The shoots should not have any flower buds. Put the cuttings in a pot with seed soil or substrate and water the young plants well. After a while, roots will form and you can plant out the seedlings.
Propagation by seeds
You can of course easily buy the seeds. Seeds for numerous varieties of phlox are available in specialist shops. You have the choice between creeping ground covers and tall perennials in a wide range of colours. When you buy seeds, you know exactly what growth habit and flower color you can expect. This is different with self-collected seeds. They aren't genuine.
Perennial phlox likes to self-seed if you don't cut off the spent inflorescences. You don't have to do anything else for it. Alternatively, you can collect and scatter the seeds. So you can choose the location and also create new beds. Annual phlox can be sowed directly outdoors from mid/end of April or grown in pots earlier.
