What are the nutritional requirements of horned violets?

Horned violets have a low to medium nutrient requirement. For this reason, they do not necessarily have to be fertilized regularly and extensively. Fertilizer is only required to regain vitality when they are no longer willing to flower.

Too much fertilizer is bad

A lot doesn't always help a lot. With horned violets you should fertilize sparingly. Too much fertilizer causes these low perennials to grow tall. The shoots become too long and when the next storm or rain shower comes, there is a risk that the shoots will snap off. As soon as the shoots grow too high, you should stop the fertilizer supply immediately!

Suitable fertilizers for horned violets

Both organic and mineral fertilizers are suitable for horned violets. You can choose conventional products from the hardware store or garden center for mineral fertilizers. The most suitable organic fertilizers are:

  • compost
  • horn shavings
  • Damn
  • bokashi

If you plan to use the flowers of the horned violet as a decoration for dessert dishes, for example, to add them to salads or to consume them in other ways, you should avoid using mineral fertilizers. Remember, small regular doses of nutrients are better than too much at once.

Best time to fertilize

Horned violets in the bed should be fertilized in spring. A little fertilizer can be added to the root area again and again until the end of the flowering period. However, one fertilization per year is usually sufficient for perennial horned violets.

The exception: horned violets in a pot

A big exception are horned violets, which are in a pot on the balcony, for example. After planting, the potting soil is sufficient for a few weeks. But then fertilizing is announced. A liquid fertilizer should be used, which is mixed into the irrigation water.

Good idea: Instead of fertilizing regularly, you should mulch the root area. This kills 3 birds with one stone. The nutrient supply is secured, the water evaporates more slowly (water less) and the mulch layer protects against severe frost.
