The high gypsophila, Gypsophila paniculata, is hardy, as are the small varieties bred from it. However, it is very sensitive to moisture, even in winter. Protection against too much water is therefore more important than protection against the cold.

Although the gypsophila is hardy, it should be protected from frost in the pot

The right winter care for gypsophila

Gypsophila in the bed usually does not need protection from the cold. Nevertheless, it makes sense to cover the plants generously. There are two reasons for this. A thick layer of brushwood or leaves not only protects against too much rain. It also largely deters wild rabbits from using your plants for winter food. Because although gypsophila is considered slightly poisonous, it is often nibbled on.

Gypsophila doesn't like it moist, because that easily leads to root rot. You can therefore do without watering these plants in winter. Normally, the rainfall during this period is more than sufficient. If the location is generally very humid, then you should transplant your gypsophila.

Have you already pruned your gypsophila after flowering? You may have stimulated it to flower a second time. Even so, you should prune it back completely in the fall, about a hand's breadth above the ground.

Potted plants in winter

In contrast to bedding plants, potted plants cannot withstand severe frost for a long period of time. There is a risk that the roots will then freeze completely and the plants will die as a result. Greenhouses (72.95€) or conservatories are ideal places for gypsophila to overwinter. For this purpose, they do not even need to be heated.

Gypsophila in a pot or planter also survives a little frost quite well. Protect it against severe frost by wrapping the planter with protective material. Bubble wrap, for example, but also an old blanket or something similar is suitable for this. In addition, you should only water your gypsophila a little every now and then.

The most important tips for the winter:

  • winter as dry as possible
  • protect against too much moisture
  • water very little
  • Protect potted plants from severe frost
  • cut back in autumn
  • protect against rabbit feeding

tips and tricks

A thick layer of twigs or leaves will protect your gypsophila from excessive rain while also protecting it from being eaten by rabbits.
