The chrysanthemum originally comes from East Asia. This magnificent perennial has been cultivated in Japan, China and Korea in particular for more than 1000 years. The "golden flower", which is the translation of the Greek name, is considered a sign of prosperity and luck - so it's no wonder that Japan has made it a national symbol in a stylized form. The Japanese imperial throne is also known as the "Chrysanthemum Throne". In Catholic France, on the other hand, the flower is considered a typical cemetery plant.

There are probably several thousand chrysanthemum varieties

Number of chrysanthemum varieties is unknown

Chrysanthemums belong to the daisy family (Asteraceae) and are also closely related to native plants such as the marguerite (Leucanthemum vulgare), the aster (Aster), the chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria) or the marigold (Calendula). There are about 40 different species in total, but mostly only the garden chrysanthemums and the very late flowering autumn chrysanthemums are important as ornamental plants. However, the number of different varieties within these two species is almost unmanageable - estimates assume several thousand different chrysanthemums.
