Not everyone who has an allotment garden will be able to treat themselves to a longer vacation trip during the summer months. However, if some organizational preparations are made, it should be possible to be away for a few days. The prerequisite for this is that you either have a helpful, reliable neighbor or have purchased an automatic irrigation system for the kitchen garden. While the latter variant is very expensive to purchase, the helper from the neighborhood will be satisfied with a small holiday souvenir that he will receive from you when he returns.

Anyone who goes on vacation needs a reliable acquaintance who will take care of the garden

An irrigation plan is needed

Simply make an understandable, true-to-scale drawing of your garden area, on which the various plants are noted with their watering frequency and the estimated amount of water. During a small barbecue reception for the substitute gardener, there will certainly be time for a tour of the garden, during which certain features that you consider worth noting will be briefly explained. This opportunity can be used to show where the garden equipment that may be required is located and how the water pump works. The following would be important immediately before departure:

Make it a little easier for your helper

  • Do not cut back the lawn too much. It is better to leave it at an average height, it will then grow less rampant.
  • As a precaution, bring potted plants to shady places and place potted plants under shady shrubs after repeated intensive watering.
  • Remove wilted flowers and damaged parts of the plants and cut back if necessary. You will then need less water when watering.

tips

Before leaving, check all plants again for possible pest infestation. If necessary, take the necessary protective measures so that any diseases cannot spread unhindered.
