These bright fruits are tempting to nibble on. But you should avoid that, because the euonymus is poisonous. It contains various toxins that affect different regions and organs. Children and pets are particularly at risk.

All parts of the euonymus are poisonous. The concentration of toxins in the seeds, which hang out of the open capsule fruit on extended stalks when the fruit ripens, is particularly high. The striking color of the fruit makes them particularly attractive to children. You don't notice the toxicity, because the fruits taste very sweet.

Eating large amounts of fruit, flowers or leaves can lead to various symptoms. 30 to 40 seeds is considered a critical dose in adults, which can lead to death. In children, after eating 15 seeds, severe symptoms of intoxication develop. 20 seeds can cause death.
However, skin contact is not dangerous. If a child collects fruit and later licks his fingers, you need not fear any danger. In the case of pets, the consumption of even small amounts of parts of the plant can be fatal.
