You don't have a spacious garden and still want your own birch? Then you will find here the most important points that you should consider in order to grow a birch on the balcony. With a few tricks, you can easily plant the trees in a pot.

With good care, birches also thrive in pots

Birch in a pot - yes or no?

The birch is known to be extremely frugal. As pioneer plants that also conquer barren areas as habitats, the hardy trees do not need much to grow well. So if you can offer them as much sun or sunny partial shade as possible, you can easily grow a birch in a pot on the balcony. The picturesque trees are among the most light-hungry species of all, so this requirement is the only binding one.

Instructions for planting

In fact, a pot about the size of a cleaning bucket and any soil is sufficient. Whether you use a seedling as an offshoot of a free-standing birch, grow a birch seedling yourself from seeds or from a shoot or whether you buy a young birch with a root ball, it is up to you. Plant the sapling in the pot as follows:

  1. Line the bottom of your planter with a layer of pebbles, sand or small shards of pottery. This ensures optimal drainage and harmful waterlogging doesn't stand a chance.
  2. Give plenty of soil over it.
  3. Place the seedling or the finished young birch as straight as possible in a prepared planting hole.
  4. Simply fill up with soil, press down well and water.

Care of the birch on the balcony

Basically, you don't have to cut or repot the birch. In fact, the aim on the balcony is mostly to keep the willingly growing tree as small as possible so that it does not exceed the available space after a while. However, the better the roots can spread, the faster and more intensively the growth begins. You should keep this motto in mind, especially if you don't have enough space.

The birch only needs fertilization very moderately or not at all. For efficient watering, the bucket can be immersed twice a week in summer until no more bubbles rise in the water.
