There are several ways to get onions over the winter. Some bulbs are frost hardy and don't need any special measures, others need to be taken out of the ground and still others need winter protection. The type of onion is decisive for overwintering.

If onions are stored in a too humid place, they will germinate

Overwinter onions

Onions overwinter in a dry, dark and airy place. In the basement or in the unheated pantry they find optimal conditions to keep for a long time. However, the onions should be spared from the frost. Extreme cold destroys the structure of the onion, making it mushy and inedible.

Overwinter seed onions

When the winter onions are sown in autumn, there are already small onion plants on the bed by the onset of winter. As a rule, they survive the cold months well, especially if they are warmed by a thick layer of snow. If there is no snow and there is a risk of frost, the young onion plants must be protected. A fleece pad or covering with brushwood is suitable.
