The spruce is a genus of plants with several species. The common or common spruce is the only species native to Europe. Serbian spruce or blue spruce are also popular plants in the garden.

The spruce flowers only from an age of at least 10 years

Very few people think about the flowering of the spruce, more important is the use as a Christmas tree. Often the flower is hardly noticeable, but sometimes you can see the pollen as a yellow "cloud" around the tree or under the spruce.

By then the tree will be at least ten years old. That's how long it takes for a spruce to bloom, some even take up to 40 years. A young spruce initially bears only female flowers, which are held together in cones. The male flowers are significantly smaller at about one centimeter long.

When do spruces bloom?

Normally, spruces only bloom about every four to seven years. The flowering period is between April and June. Some circumstances, such as water or nutrient deficiencies, lead to what is known as an anxiety bloom. A (persistent) strong frost period can also lead to this. Here you should get to the bottom of the cause so that your spruce does not die.

The essentials in brief:

  • only flowers when it is at least 10 years old,
  • it can take up to 40 years until the first flowering
  • separate sex flowers
  • a young spruce may have only female flowers
  • Flowering period: between April and June
  • pollination by wind
  • flowers only about every 4 to 7 years
  • occasionally "anxiety bloom" due to lack of water or nutrients, as well as severe cold

tips

If your spruce blossoms at very short intervals, then you should get to the bottom of the cause of this "anxiety bloom".
