Refinement takes place at the age of 2 years

Instructions for grafting the walnut tree

  • Best time for grafting: December
  • Required tree age: 2 years

preparation

  1. Dig the young tree out of the ground, including the roots.
  2. Shorten it to a length of about 15 centimeters.
  3. Cut off the side shoots.
  4. Plant the prepared tree in a pot filled with soil.
  5. Put a clear plastic bag over the tree. This creates a humid and warm climate that promotes rapid bud formation.
  6. Place the pot in a bright room with a temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius.
  7. Water regularly to keep the soil constantly moist.
  8. After a good two to four weeks, the first buds will open. The walnut tree is now ready for the actual refinement.

finishing

  1. Saw off a so-called scion (about 50 centimeters long shoot from the crown, which grew in the previous year) from your young tree.
  2. Identify a spot on the walnut that is as thick as the scion.
  3. Cut the shoot diagonally at this point, at a 30-degree angle. Make sure to create an incision scar of about five to seven centimeters here.
  4. Then shorten the scion to a length of about ten centimeters, also at a 30-degree angle.
  5. Place the pruning scars of the two shoots directly on top of each other.
  6. Stabilize the whole thing with a rubber band or rope.
  7. Seal the joint with warm liquid wax.
  8. Return the grafted walnut tree to the bright, warm spot where it was previously.
  9. Check the tree regularly. You should cut off any shoots under the grafting point immediately.
  10. After two to three months, as soon as the first leaves sprout, you can remove the plastic bag.

diploma

  1. Leave the pot with the grafted walnut in the greenhouse or place it in a partially shaded spot in the garden until mid-March. Please note, however, that in the case of the second variant, your walnut must always be indoors at night to protect against frost.
  2. As soon as you no longer have to fear ground frost, you can plant the grafted walnut tree in the garden.
