A grafted walnut tree often brings you the first harvest after just four years. Furthermore, the latter is usually of better quality with a grafted walnut. And: A grafted tree is more resistant to pests and diseases. We present an easy way to finish your walnut tree yourself.

Instructions for grafting the walnut tree
- Best time for grafting: December
- Required tree age: 2 years
preparation
- Dig the young tree out of the ground, including the roots.
- Shorten it to a length of about 15 centimeters.
- Cut off the side shoots.
- Plant the prepared tree in a pot filled with soil.
- Put a clear plastic bag over the tree. This creates a humid and warm climate that promotes rapid bud formation.
- Place the pot in a bright room with a temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius.
- Water regularly to keep the soil constantly moist.
- After a good two to four weeks, the first buds will open. The walnut tree is now ready for the actual refinement.
finishing
- Saw off a so-called scion (about 50 centimeters long shoot from the crown, which grew in the previous year) from your young tree.
- Identify a spot on the walnut that is as thick as the scion.
- Cut the shoot diagonally at this point, at a 30-degree angle. Make sure to create an incision scar of about five to seven centimeters here.
- Then shorten the scion to a length of about ten centimeters, also at a 30-degree angle.
- Place the pruning scars of the two shoots directly on top of each other.
- Stabilize the whole thing with a rubber band or rope.
- Seal the joint with warm liquid wax.
- Return the grafted walnut tree to the bright, warm spot where it was previously.
- Check the tree regularly. You should cut off any shoots under the grafting point immediately.
- After two to three months, as soon as the first leaves sprout, you can remove the plastic bag.
diploma
- Leave the pot with the grafted walnut in the greenhouse or place it in a partially shaded spot in the garden until mid-March. Please note, however, that in the case of the second variant, your walnut must always be indoors at night to protect against frost.
- As soon as you no longer have to fear ground frost, you can plant the grafted walnut tree in the garden.
