For centuries, people have believed that a walnut tree should help to drive away mosquitoes or keep them away. But is it really the case that by planting a walnut tree in your own garden you are safe from unwanted insects? Our guide explains!

Mosquitoes do not like walnut trees, but the tree does not offer 100% protection

An old peasant saying

Basically, the assumption that walnut trees keep mosquitoes away is an old farmer's wisdom. If you look at the relatively special ingredients of the walnut, it quickly becomes clear that there is some truth to this wisdom.

Actually also clear: why else should people have been so determined in the past to plant a walnut on their farms near dung and compost heaps?! It is the vapors that repel not only mosquitoes, but also bluebottles and horseflies.

In addition to the advantages as a "fortress" against mosquitoes and other insects, walnut trees also brought them rich harvests of delicious and healthy walnuts. Putting all of that together, it's easy to see why walnut trees were as popular in the past as they are today.

Walnut always effective against mosquitoes?

Some people report that despite having a walnut tree, their garden is frequented quite intensively by mosquitoes. So it would be stupid to interpret the walnut as a panacea against these annoying buzzing insects.

In short, insect protection from a walnut tree does not always work 100 percent.

Note: When planting a walnut, also remember that the tree does not tolerate competition. The reason for this is that the leaves contain tannins and release juglone when they decompose. The latter has been shown to have a strong inhibiting effect on the germination and growth of other plants. That means a walnut wants to stand for itself - in every respect.

Tips on using the walnut against mosquitoes

  • Place your garden bench or set of garden furniture near your walnut tree if you have one. Normally you are spared itchy mosquito bites.
  • Crush some leaves from a walnut tree and rub the result on your arms. Because of the essential oils in the leaves, mosquitoes are less likely to fly at you.
  • Lay out walnut branches on your balcony or terrace. The distinctive scent of the same keeps the pests away quite reliably.
