Weeds are one of the most unloved plants in the garden, and fighting them can take a lot of time. No sooner was mechanical weeding than the first cotyledons appear again. Chemical agents should only be used with care for ecological reasons. If you want to push back weeds in the bed in an environmentally friendly way and with only a minimum of work, fleece against weeds is a good option.

What types of weed wrap are there?
Weed film is often also referred to as weed fleece (21.70€) (mulch film, mulch fleece). This is a breathable film that allows water, air and nutrients to penetrate the soil, but its special properties effectively inhibit weed growth. It acts like a mulch layer of organic materials. You get these in different widths so that you can adjust the foil to the size of the beds.
Once laid out, the maintenance effort can be reduced to a minimum thanks to the water-permeable film. At the same time, the plants find optimal growth conditions.
Where can the water permeable film be used?
In principle, this can be used wherever weeds are to be effectively pushed back. This can be:
- terraces,
- ornamental beds,
- vegetable beds,
- rockeries,
- gravel surfaces.
In order for the film to work optimally, you can get it in different thicknesses:
- 150 g/m² (extra strong): For extreme demands.
- 120 g/m² (heavy): For very heavy weed growth. It is mainly used in sloping beds and rock gardens.
- 80 g/m² (normal): standard garden film for kitchen and ornamental gardens.
- 50 g/m² (light): Ideal for kitchen gardens.
How is weed film laid?
Laying is very easy. In addition to the water-permeable film, you need:
- ground anchor for attachment,
- as well as potting soil, gravel, bark mulch or another top layer.
- Depending on whether it is a bed or a path: plants, gravel, grit (€46.95) or paving stones as a top layer.
Even before you lay the water-permeable film, you should mechanically remove weeds from the bed area. Also remove impurities such as large stones, hoe the soil thoroughly and then smooth the soil.
It continues as follows:
- Spread fleece over the surface and cut to size if necessary.
- Fasten garden foil with ground anchors.
- Cut a cross into the fabric where plants are to be planted later.
- Dig a planting hole and plant.
- Spread the corners of the fleece back around the plant.
- Cover with soil or other material.
- Water and fertilize as usual.
tips
How long the weed fleece can push back weeds depends on the weather conditions. Direct sunlight may cause the film to age faster. Evenly covered with soil, garden foil can serve its purpose for 25 years.
