Walnut trees generally don't demand too much when it comes to care. They are very undemanding - also and especially in relation to fertilization. Nevertheless, we advise you to provide your beautiful garden friend with the nutrients he needs once a year. This post will tell you how to best go about it!

The walnut tree - an easy-care plant
Ultimately, a walnut tree just needs an adequate location in order to thrive vigorously and bear fruit over the years (rather decades). If the tree finds enough nutrients in the soil, it is (almost) perfectly happy.
However, we recommend not taking any risks and fertilizing the walnut tree regularly despite its undemanding nature. Once a year is sufficient.
Which fertilizer is suitable for the walnut?
Good news straight away: You can easily and happily do without fertilizers from specialist retailers. For a walnut tree, you usually do not need to buy any liquid, whole or organic fertilizers.
Instead, it makes sense to spoil the walnut with the necessary nutrients in a natural way. Go for the simplest and cheapest solution: mature compost.
Fertilize walnut tree - in three easy steps
- Wait until your walnut tree has lost its fruit.
- Place the mature compost on the ground around the trunk of the walnut.
- Then carefully work the compost into the soil.
Natural fertilization improves the soil in two ways:
1. They optimize the soil quality in terms of nutrients.
2. They loosen the soil, which makes it easier for it to absorb moisture.
Extra: When to do a soil analysis
Is your walnut growing poorly? Is it perhaps not producing any fruit despite its maturity? Or is the tree developing wilted leaves?
In these three cases, you should (or have) carry out a soil analysis. That's how it's done:
- Remove a little soil from the immediate vicinity of the trunk.
- Place the sample in an airtight container.
- Take the container of soil to a nursery or lab.
- Have the earth tested by the experts there.
- See which nutrients are missing from the soil that are important for walnuts.
- Then carry out targeted fertilization.
