A camellia in full bloom is truly an attractive sight, but it also requires good care and a really suitable location. If the leaves of this sensitive plant curl up, you should react quickly.

Frost damage can be to blame for curled leaves

Why do camellia leaves curl up?

The most common reason why camellia leaves curl is due to low humidity. If this is over 70 percent, then a camellia feels good. However, if the humidity falls well below 70 percent, the plant curls up its leaves to reduce the evaporation of moisture and prevent it from drying out.

Poor water supply from damaged or rotten roots will also cause a camellia's leaves to wilt and later fall off. Other reasons are not enough water, watering with calcareous (tap) water or damage caused by frost.

Possible reasons for curled leaves:

  • too low humidity
  • damaged or rotted roots
  • water too little
  • Pour with calcareous water
  • frost damage
  • wrong time to repot

Can I still save my camellia?

If the roots of your camellia are still intact, there is a good chance the plant can still be saved. To find out, you have to carefully remove the camellia from the ground. If the soil is wet, then replace it. On the other hand, if the roots are rotten, the camellia will die and you can safely dispose of the plant.

If the root ball of your camellia has dried out completely, water the plant with plenty of low-lime water. Drain off the excess water. Water every day or two until the plant looks fresh again. However, it may take a few weeks for your camellia to fully recover. This also applies to possible frost damage. In this case, you should cut back damaged shoots generously.

tips

The sooner you react to curled leaves on your camellia, the greater the chance of successfully saving the plant.
