The loveliest time for flowering plants should be when they are in bloom, which of course also applies to camellias. Unfortunately, it is not easy to care for and easily reacts to mistakes with a meager bloom or even lets it fail completely.

Why isn't my camellia blooming?
There are many reasons for a camellia not flowering. They are not always easy to recognize, because care mistakes made a long time ago can also affect flowering. The location also plays a major role in bud formation. The camellia needs a lot of light during this time, but only little warmth. A change of location during this period will quickly lead to the buds falling off.
The root ball of a camellia should never dry out completely, but it must not get too wet either, otherwise the roots will rot. Both of these can result in your camellia not blooming for a long time or losing its flowers prematurely. Excessive fertilization stimulates shoot growth, but at the same time inhibits bud formation. The result is a rather meager bloom.
Reasons for no flowering:
- too little light during bud formation
- too warm location
- neutral or alkaline soil
- wrong fertilization
- Change of location at the wrong time
How can I encourage camellias to bloom profusely?
It can take a few years for a home-grown camellia to bloom for the first time. Nevertheless, make sure you take good care of it and regularly water it, as well as the correct pH value in the soil. This should be slightly acidic. If the plant develops well, your camellia will bloom all the more beautifully later. A young camellia is not hardy and should definitely be protected from frost.
Encouraging the camellia to flower:
- leave it outdoors for as long as possible
- plenty of light during bud formation
- Ensure high humidity during shoot formation, spray the plant if necessary
- Stop fertilizing immediately after budding
- Never let root balls dry out
- Avoid frost damage
- If possible, do not move camellias during budding and flowering
- avoid too much heat, ideal temperature during flowering: around 15 °C
tips
The camellia is not a houseplant and will not flower there.
