Anyone who would like to harvest broad beans, also known as broad beans, as early as possible can bring them forward from the end of January. In the following you will find out how to proceed step by step and how to secure a bountiful harvest of broad beans.

When and where are broad beans preferred?
Broad beans tolerate light frosts, but not when they are about to sprout. Therefore, you should prefer your broad beans in a frost-free place such as a shed, the basement or in the greenhouse. It is possible to bring the broad beans forward from the end of January, but you can also start later.
Grow broad beans step by step
When moving forward, proceed as follows:
- Soak your beans overnight before sowing to help them germinate.
- Fill your seed trays with soil.
- Make a hole several inches deep in the ground.
- Place the beans in the holes and cover them with soil.
- Water the pots well.
- Water the germinating seeds regularly.
tips
Another advantage of preferring them is that you can sort out seeds that have not germinated and puny plants, so that only strong, healthy plants come into your bed.
Plant broad beans in the bed
After four weeks, the plants can go outdoors. Broad beans tolerate light frosts, but with soil temperatures below -5 degrees, you should protect them from the cold with fleece.
- First, sort out any ungerminated or diseased seedlings.
- Then loosen the soil in the bed a little and pull out the desired number of rows with a stick or rope and thread.
- The distance between each row should be 40cm to 60cm.
- Then mark the planting sites using a tape measure.
- A distance of at least 10cm between the individual plants is advisable.
- Now, with a small shovel, dig holes large enough for the plants and place the seedlings in them.
- Fill the holes with soil and mound the plants a little. Press the soil firmly to give the plants enough support.
tips
Broad beans have a growing season of about 4 months. This means that if you prefer your broad beans at the end of January, you can already harvest them at the end of May. More information about the harvest can be found here.
