When you think of the ash, do you also have in mind a mighty tree that grows astonishingly tall? Now imagine the deciduous tree as a small bonsai in a bucket. Doesn't your imagination reach that far? Then you should definitely read the following article and convince yourself of the advantages of an ash tree as a bonsai.

The ash is a pretty bonsai

The Formosana Ash

Ashes are among the largest deciduous trees in Europe and, given their height, are less suitable for keeping in buckets. The situation is completely different with the Formosana ash, a special subspecies from China that was specially bred for keeping bonsai. This variety reaches a maximum height of 15 m, which can be limited by regular pruning. Not only their partly evergreen characteristics make them the perfect room bonsai. In spring, the Formosana ash impresses with beautiful white flowers.

location

You can either cultivate the Formosana ash continuously at 16-20°C in a sunny spot indoors, or put it outside during the summer months. However, you should avoid direct sunlight here.

maintenance

pour

Do not let the substrate dry out completely. In summer, the water requirement is significantly higher than in winter.

Fertilize

In summer you should give the Formosana ash bonsai liquid fertilizer weekly. In winter, reduce the dose to every six weeks.

To cut

All cutting shapes are suitable for the Formosana ash. However, the most popular is the upright form. The great thing about the variety is the high pruning tolerance. Any errors grow together quickly and remain without consequences. However, you should not cut back too much. Initially, shaping cuts are necessary so that the branches branch out well. Disturbing branches are only removed later.

repot

Repot your bonsai ash into a larger container every two to three years. A root cut is recommended at the same time.
