Many perennials or flowering shrubs are planted solely because of their lush and/or colorful flowers, but this should not be the case with the ginkgo, as it flowers quite inconspicuously green. His strength lies elsewhere.

The Gingko flowers only from the age of 20 to 35 years

The ginkgo shows a special feature, namely there are purely male and purely female trees, as well as poplars or willows. Both sexes bear green flowers from March to April, which grow in the form of catkins on male trees, but solitary and long-stalked on females. Only the female trees bear fruit later.

The essentials in brief:

  • separate gender
  • sexually mature very late (at the age of 20 to 35)
  • male flowers: in catkins
  • female flowers: solitary, long-stalked
  • Flowering time: March to April
  • Flower color: green
  • Fruits only on female trees

tips

Since the ripe fruits smell quite unpleasantly of butyric acid, you should not plant female trees where you would like to during the ripening period.
