But hobby gardeners love the angel's trumpet - its magnificent, impressive flowers. It's all the more regrettable if they don't want to show themselves. However, the lack of flowering usually has very simple causes and can be remedied with simple measures.

There can be various reasons for the angel's trumpet not blooming

The basic requirements for the coveted angel's trumpet flower

First of all, it should be pointed out once again that the angel's trumpet has to expend some strength to produce its admirable, large flowers. It is therefore quite understandable that she saves herself in unfavorable circumstances.

High water demand

Due to its large leaves, which evaporate a lot of water, it is also very busy outside of the flowering season. The angel's trumpet needs a lot of water and does not like it at all when it is neglected in this regard.

High nutrient requirement

In addition, like all nightshade plants, it is a heavy feeder and is not only very thirsty, but also very hungry. Fertilizing is therefore mandatory for her - and as regularly as possible. Because in the bucket culture, which is now necessary in this country, it can quickly get into a nutrient deficiency. Regular repotting is therefore also a basic rule when cultivating angel's trumpets.

In order to make the angel's trumpet fit for the strenuous flowering, all of its basic needs should be in the green:

  • generous, even water supply
  • adequate and regular nutrient supply through fertilization
  • as voluminous, rich substrate as possible

Possible reasons for the lack of flowers

The most common reasons for the lack of flowering also arise from these essential basic needs.

Reason 1: lack of water

In fact, the angel's trumpet can already go on strike due to insufficient or irregular watering. Especially on hot days, it's easy for her feet to get too dry. In this case, you simply have to water it extensively every day until the water comes out at the bottom. And don't let it dry out again!

Reason 2: nutrient deficiency

Certainly the most common reason for the lack of flowering is a lack of nutrients. The angel's trumpet should receive additional food in the form of fertilization in at least two ways: Once the addition of long-term fertilizer in the substrate is recommended. They do this best if you put the plant in a larger pot during the winter. It must then be supplied with acute fertilizer about 2 to 3 times a week. It is best to use a universal growth fertilizer first and then, from mid-June, when flowering should set in, a potassium-containing bloom fertilizer for potted plants.

If you have fertilized too little or too irregularly, you can make a difference, especially by increasing the amount of fertiliser, preferably with flowering fertiliser.

Reason 3: Too much/wrong pruning

What can also prevent flowering is pruning too intensively before or after the winter break - you always have to make sure that you never remove all the shoots from the upper flowering region. If that has already happened, it is not all over yet: if you wait a little, the angel's trumpet will form new flowering shoots and bring you a few late flowers.
