- Fertilizing a weigela outdoors
- Fertilize the weigela in the bucket properly
- Can I also over-fertilize a weigela?
Although a weigela is quite easy to care for, it should not be left to its own devices. Due to its enormous abundance of flowers, it needs quite a lot of nutrients. The supply of the right fertilizer in sufficient quantities is therefore not unimportant.

Fertilizing a weigela outdoors
It is best to fertilize your weigela outdoors in spring. In this way you stimulate the development of the buds that have already been planted in autumn. Fertilizing with well-ripened compost is ideal and inexpensive. About two to three liters per plant are perfectly adequate.
Alternatively, the supply with a liquid fertilizer is possible. It can be administered with the irrigation water and should contain sufficient potassium and nitrogen. To keep the moisture well in the soil, you can mulch your weigela.
Fertilize the weigela in the bucket properly
If you grow your weigela in a bucket, then fertilize it continuously from April to July. It only needs no fertilizer in the first few months after planting or transplanting, the fresh soil contains enough nutrients for the time being. If the willingness to bloom decreases despite a good supply of nutrients, then think about rejuvenating the root ball.
Can I also over-fertilize a weigela?
Too much of a good thing not only harms humans but also many plants. Therefore, you should not fertilize a weigela too much. This often leads to so-called horny shoots or water shoots on which no flowers form. At the same time, the willingness to flower on the shoots that are actually suitable for this often decreases.
The essentials in brief:
- ideal: fresh, well-drained and humus-rich soil
- Fertilize adequately if the soil is poor
- Over-fertilization can lead to horny shoots
- ideal fertilization: 2 to 3 liters of compost in spring
- Fertilize potted plants from April to July
- do not fertilize in winter
tips
It is best to give your weigela outdoors two to three liters of well-ripened compost in the spring, then it will get through the flowering period well supplied.
