Sometimes it's time to redesign a garden, plant a hedge or loosen up existing structures. Then the transplanting of perennials and shrubs is necessary, but not all tolerate this transplanting equally well.

Small weigela can usually be transplanted without any problems

Can a Weigela tolerate transplanting?

Not only is the Weigela hardy and fairly easy to care for, it also tolerates transplanting, provided care is taken when doing so. In addition, your Weigela should not be older than about four years when it is transferred.

What should I consider when transplanting?

When digging up, remember that the weigela has relatively shallow roots and forms a fairly extensive root ball. The less you damage it, the less the plant suffers from the move. Therefore, pay particular attention to the sensitive fine roots. Transplanting is ideal on a rather overcast and not too hot day.

At the new location, dig an appropriately sized planting hole, it should be significantly larger than the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom a little and put some rotted compost in the hole as a starter fertilizer. Then put in the weigela, fill in the soil and water the plant well.

Transplanting step by step:

  • if possible only transplant young
  • do not damage roots
  • has an extensive root ball as a shallow root
  • dig a correspondingly large planting hole (approx. 1 ½ times the size of the bale)
  • Loosen the soil in the planting hole
  • put in some compost
  • Use Weigela
  • Fill in the soil and press or tap it down
  • Water the plant well
  • possibly mulch (keeps the moisture in the soil better)

Does the weigela need special care after transplanting?

In the first few weeks after transplanting, you should water your weigela regularly. If it is firmly rooted after some time, then it no longer needs additional water. A layer of bark mulch will keep the soil around your weigela moist. If transplanted late in autumn, light winter protection is recommended.

tips

The older a weigela gets, the more it suffers from relocation. Therefore, you should transplant these shrubs as young as possible.
