A bed edging ensures that lawn and weeds do not grow uncontrollably into beds. At the same time, it stops large-scale vegetable plants such as pumpkins or cucumbers from spreading happily throughout the garden. There are different variants for the vegetable patch, which we would like to present to you in more detail here.

Wood can be used in a variety of ways as a bed edging

Plants as border

Evergreen plants such as the boxwood have been planted in monastery and manor gardens to border beds for centuries. Unfortunately, the box tree moth affects the small shrub in many areas, so the hobby gardener should resort to alternatives.

There is a choice of various small shrubs, also evergreen, with similar leaf and growth habit, which are also very pruning-resistant:

  • hedge myrtle
  • Spindle bush
  • Mountain Ilex
  • dwarf privet.

But a fragrant border of lavender or traditional kitchen herbs such as chives, thyme, sage or southernwood are also ideal for edging the vegetable patch.

Bed edging made of wood

This fits optically very well in natural gardens and can be built with little effort. It is preferable to use hardwood, as this is weather-resistant and therefore durable. Pallet wood, which is very popular as a building material at the moment, is also well suited. It is inexpensive and can be easily redesigned to edging beds.

If you want a natural-looking order in the garden and don't want to reach for a saw and hammer yourself, a wooden border made of low palisades is suitable. The wooden elements are connected to each other with a flexible wire and are simply stuck into the ground. This limitation is also very robust thanks to boiler pressure impregnation.

Stone surrounds

The bed edging made of stone also has a long tradition. It forms a very clean finish and, depending on the type of stone chosen, blends harmoniously into almost any garden setting. This boundary is extremely easy to care for and weather-resistant.

You can use different stones like:

  • concrete slabs
  • bricks or bricks
  • granite
  • river stones or boulders.

Depending on the substrate, place the stones in a bed of sand or mortar and stabilize them with cement.

tips

Homemade or ready-made woven elements made of wood are very popular because of their rustic charm. They are easy to attach and extend. Since it is a renewable, local raw material, these bed edgings for the vegetable bed are also a good choice from an ecological point of view.
