Due to their high sugar content, dates provide energy, are easy to digest and are said to strengthen the nerves. As a rule, the fruits of the Orient are dried and therefore have a long shelf life. But with some varieties, freezing also makes sense.

The shelf life of dates
Here you need to distinguish between fresh and dried fruits. Fresh dates are available from August to October. They still contain their natural moisture, and their skin is plump and matte. If stored dry and cool, they will last about three to four weeks. Dried dates were dehydrated. Their skin is rather leathery and dark. The sugar contained in the fruit ensures a shelf life of about a year. Dried dates are available all year round.
Can dates be frozen?
Despite their long shelf life, you can also freeze dates. However, when buying a larger quantity of dates, you should ask whether the dates are actually fresh or whether the goods were already frozen.
Dates are often flash frozen after harvest and imported in this state to ensure their freshness. The dates are only thawed at their destination. Freezing them again would significantly reduce the quality of the fruit.
You can always freeze dried dates, but the quality will suffer. Nutrients and aromas are partially lost and the consistency of the dates also changes. Use standard household freezer bags or cans.
Dates can be frozen with the stone and should be thawed at room temperature to allow their flavor to develop better.
Which types of dates are suitable for freezing?
You can get many different types of dates on the market. Not all can be frozen, while others should be stored frozen.
- Hayani date, it is not dried. To keep the freshness, you should freeze the fruit.
- Barhi date, it comes fresh from Israel in the summer months and is not dried. It also stays fresh for a long time when frozen.
- Although the varieties Medjoul and Deglet Nour are dried, they can be stored well frozen.
