- The (potential) problem with pitting an avocado
- Pitting an avocado - short step-by-step instructions
The good news is that pitting avocados is easy. The bad news: sometimes the large stone inside the fruit resists and it's difficult to pull it out without damaging the precious flesh. With our short step-by-step instructions, however, pitting avocados is child's play.

The (potential) problem with pitting an avocado
You may be familiar with the scenario: You cut the avocado in half and are trying to pull it out loosely. But that doesn't work. So you grab a spoon and fork and somehow poke out the slippery core - it's logical that this act can't take place without damaging the pulp.
We recommend following one of our step-by-step guides in the next two sections. This way you can get the stone out of the avocado quickly and completely without damaging the flesh.
Pitting an avocado - short step-by-step instructions
You don't need a lot of time or strength to cleanly pit avocados. Don't bother trying to "choke out" with a spoon and fork. Basically, all you need is a sharp kitchen knife. The procedure usually takes less than a minute.
- Cut the avocado lengthwise down the middle of the pit - all around, i.e. halving the fruit. Use a sharp kitchen knife for this.
- When opening the two halves, turn them slightly in opposite directions.
- Pick up the core half and lightly tap the stone with the edge of a long knife. The cutting edge penetrates the core.
- Move the knife back and forth briefly - this loosens the core.
- Now you can easily pull out the stone with the knife.
Creative alternative with corkscrew and kitchen knife
There is also a second - particularly elegant - method of removing the pit from an avocado with minimal effort and without damaging the pulp:
- Take a standard corkscrew and screw it into the avocado - hitting the bottom third of the stone from the side.
- Leave the corkscrew in place and grab a sharp knife.
- Cut around the avocado once with the knife.
- Separate the two halves of the fruit. The stone is stuck in the corkscrew - you have an easy game and undamaged pulp.
