Why regular watering is so important
Grass roots are very short and often only reach a few centimeters into the ground. This can be particularly problematic in dry and sunny locations when the soil quickly loses moisture due to the temperature and position of the sun. Since the lawn cannot take care of itself from the depths of the ground, you now have to provide the required water. As a rule, summer downpours are not enough, because a square area of lawn has an average requirement of around 2.5 liters per day - plus the up to four liters of water that evaporate on hot and sunny days.
Do not water the lawn every day
Don't water your lawn every day, however, as doing so will train its roots to grow just below the surface of the soil and become dependent on frequent watering. This becomes particularly problematic if you want to go away for a few days and have no one to turn on the lawn sprinkler (€26.95) every day. Instead, you can also "educate" it by watering it thoroughly and in the required amount of around 20 to 25 liters per square meter about once or twice a week.
How long and how often should you water the lawn?
The weekly watering rhythm means that the soil is well moistened to a depth of about ten centimetres, so that the roots can use this reservoir and are not dependent on a more frequent interval. In order to be able to estimate how long you have to water, it is best to place a rain gauge in the middle of the lawn and run a stopwatch while watering. When the vessel is about two centimeters full of water, stop the timer. At this point you have reached the required amount of water - how long it takes you depends on the size of the lawn, the position of the sun and the irrigation system.

Check the watering success by taking samples about ten centimeters deep from the lawn. These should be quite dry in the first one to two centimeters below the surface and slightly damp underneath.
