Did you know that you can increase the growth of your sequoia with the right fertilizer? Here you will receive valuable tips on which agents are best to use and when it is advisable to enrich the substrate.

Young sequoias are happy about a regular fertilizer application

From what point in time do you fertilize?

From a height of one meter, your Sequoia is big enough to put it outdoors. First of all, the earth is still rich in important minerals, so that your sequoia can take care of itself. From the second year, however, you should help with fertilizer, especially since the plant has a comparatively high need due to its rapid growth. Spring is a good time for this, as your sequoia is recovering from hibernation at this time and new shoots are forming. Young plants need a lot of fertilizer in order to optimally develop their root system. Once your Sequoia has developed into a sizeable tree, annual fertilization is still advisable, but not so crucial for growth.

Appropriate means

There are a number of ways to fertilize your Sequoia:

  • compost
  • horn shavings
  • Organic mineral fertilizer, for example for ornamental trees

tip

It is best to use a fertilizer that releases slowly. You can not only produce mature compost yourself inexpensively, the applied layer also protects against evaporation of the irrigation water. This saves you water costs and effort.

Be careful with mineral fertilizers

If you decide to use mineral fertilizers, sufficient irrigation is required so that the substance is well distributed in the soil. Too high concentrations attack the roots of the sequoia.

Requirements for bucket maintenance

When kept in tubs, the amount of substrate is limited, which is why the mineral deposits are lower. After you have fertilized your Sequoia in the spring, you should repeat the measure three months later.
