The easy-care and hardy gorse is almost the ideal garden plant, as it hardly requires any work, but flowers beautifully. If you like, you can also cultivate it in pots or tubs to beautify your terrace or balcony.

Broom can also be cultivated in pots

Buy gorse in a pot

You can buy gorse both bare-root and in pots or containers. If you have a choice, then go for the container or potted plant. The root ball of these plants is well protected and remains so until planting.

Plant gorse in pots

Be sure to look for a bucket that is deep enough or a high flower pot that will provide enough space for the taproot of the gorse. A hole in the bottom is important so that excess irrigation water can drain off directly and there is no waterlogging. Cover it with an old shard of pottery or some rocks so it can't get clogged with potting soil that washes out.

Fill the planter about a third full with poor soil or a mixture of potting soil and sand and place your gorse inside, then fill in with your chosen substrate. Press it gently and water the gorse a little.

The essentials in brief:

  • choose a sufficiently deep planter
  • create a drainage layer
  • choose a sunny location
  • Wind is well tolerated

How do I care for gorse in a pot?

As a container plant, the gorse needs a little more care than outdoors. The gorse should be watered from time to time, because it can hardly get the water from the depths in the pot itself. A little fertilizer is also useful. However, too much of it will damage flowering.

Proper overwintering is important for potted plants. The root ball must not freeze completely, otherwise the broom will die. Therefore, wrap the bucket with protective material, for example an old blanket, jute bags or similar. The bale must not dry out either.

Although better known as a garden plant, you can also cultivate your gorse in a pot.
