A well pump moves the water from your well to where you want it. Depending on the depth of the well, a normal well pump is sufficient or a so-called deep well pump is required. With our product comparison and comprehensive guide, we would like to help you quickly find the best well pump for your needs.

Our recommendations

Gardena Comfort garden pump 5000/5: Irrigation pump with 5000 l/h flow rate and long service life, power 1300 W, high quality, low-noise, automatic safety shutdown (1734-20)

According to numerous Amazon reviewers, the Gardena comfort garden pump has a lot to offer. With a lot of power and very quickly, it should pump the water to the desired location.
Some buyers of the model recommend ordering a sand pre-filter at the same time to prevent internal damage from the fine sand and to extend the life of the well pump. The advantage is that if the worst comes to the worst, almost every element is available as an original Gardena spare part.
According to Amazon reports, connecting the pump is easy, especially if you order a pressure hose.

The Einhell GC-GP 6538 garden pump impresses buyers on Amazon in particular with its excellent price-performance ratio. In addition, the version with the good pump performance is convincing. One of the advantages of the well pump is its quiet operation.
The reviewers give point deductions for the missing rubber feet under the pump, as this affects stability. The somewhat wobbly plastic handle is also described as a (manageable) flaw.
Our analysis of the areas of application described by the buyers clearly showed that the well pump can be used in many ways - for example for rain barrels (€53.99) and septic tanks. The connection to irrigation systems of all kinds should also work perfectly.

In a comparison of our top 3, the MVPower water/submersible pump is the cheapest model. The very low price reflects the pure, factual numbers, but not the actual performance of the well pump when you look at the opinions of users on Amazon.
For the most part, buyers of the design are overwhelmed by what the pump offers. It is said to work extremely energy-efficiently and is particularly recommended for garden owners who have to pump the water up to a maximum of 1.6 meters. The reviewers are also positively surprised by the good build quality.
The tenor that runs through as a quote: "Good things obviously don't have to be expensive."
Purchase Criteria
Type
well pump: Simple well pumps, often referred to as garden pumps, are suitable for wells that are not particularly deep, since much less pressure has to be built up here. Examples of such designs are suction pumps for ornamental fountains and self-priming centrifugal pumps for garden irrigation. You should be aware that normal garden pumps are often not frost-proof.
domestic waterworks: A domestic waterworks (domestic water automat) is extremely practical if you want to transport larger amounts of water quickly and reliably. It can be used for both the garden and the house. In comparison to a deep well pump, however, the head of a domestic waterworks is very limited.

Gardena Classic domestic waterworks 3000/4 eco: domestic water pump with thermal protection switch, non-return valve, automatic start/stop, 650W power, max. flow rate 2800 l/h (1753-20)
179.89 EUR To the productdeep well pump: If you have a particularly deep well or one with a very narrow diameter, you need a pump that can build up significantly more pressure (than a simple well pump). Then a deep well pump is ideal. The high head ensures safe water transport. In addition, these pumps are normally freeze proof and do not need to be dismantled/put away in winter. BTW: The deep well pump size you need, about 1 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch or 6 inch depends on the diameter of your well.

Einhell deep well pump GC-DW 1000 N (1000 W, 6500 L/h, 45 m head, 99 mm pump diameter, pressure connection and dirt strainer made of stainless steel, multi-stage impeller, overload switch)
188.44 EUR To the productoperating mode
Manual/no power: There are still a few manually operated well pumps. These are operated by hand and therefore require no electricity. The advantage is offset by the disadvantage that the delivery capacity is significantly limited - apart from the fact that you have to use a lot of muscle power.
electric: Most well pumps are electrically operated. If you plan to use the pump regularly or even permanently, this operating mode is the only sensible one. You generally need a classic 230V mains power supply for this. Depending on the quantities the pump is to deliver, a lower output is absolutely sufficient (below 100 watts) or a high output is essential (from 500 watts and up).
battery pack: A special form of the electrically operated well pump is the battery-powered one. Practically, this variant does not require a direct power connection, but you have to charge the battery regularly.
Solar: Solar powered fountain pumps only work in sunlight. Therefore, they offer an environmentally conscious solution for simpler tasks. It is important that your chosen solar pump has an electricity storage system.

The deeper the well and the more water is required, the more powerful the well pump must be in relation to the maximum delivery height and volume. Only if the values of these two criteria cover the demand does sufficient water flow up from the well.
Two examples:
- For watering a larger garden plot, we recommend a flow rate of around 5,000 liters per hour (or more).
- For a smaller garden with only one or two lawn sprinklers, a flow rate of between 300 and 1,500 liters per hour is absolutely sufficient.
Important: You simply measure the required delivery height based on the depth of your well.
pressure
When printing, you only have to make sure that it harmonises with the flow rate. Example: At 5,000 liters per hour, 5 bar is ideal; at 300 to 1,500 liters per hour, a pressure of less than 1 bar is sometimes sufficient. Of course, it is always better if the pressure is as high as possible.
suction lift
The suction height is defined as the height between
- the water surface in the well where the water is sucked in,
- and the pump.
Always look at them in the context of funding levels.
Example: A well pump with a delivery height of 10 m and a suction height of 5 m can be set up at any point that is a maximum of 5 m above the water surface. If you place it at a height of 6 m, the performance of the pump will not be sufficient.
Extras/Accessories
Depending on the version, the following properties, extras and accessories are a sign of high quality:
- Stainless steel shaft
- Sand tolerance/sand resistance
- filter
- integrated pressure switch for easy operation
- capacitor
- dry run protection
- check valve
- hose for connection
frequently asked Questions
What is a well pump for?
With your own well, you can water your garden and sometimes also your house particularly cheaply. A conventional well pump is required to pump the water out of this well - even a deep well pump in the case of a well more than eight meters deep.
How does a well pump work?
Whether classic well or special deep well pump - design and function are similar. Every electric pump consists of the pump itself and a motor. The latter drives the water transport and is connected to the pump via a shaft. This shaft in turn is driven by several turbines. This creates the necessary water pressure. The water is transported via the blades attached to the turbines.
Worth knowing: The number of turbines determines
- what is the pressure and
- how much water can be transported (litres per hour).
The well pump does not start. What to do?
First check the power supply. If everything fits in this regard, you should look at all the individual parts one after the other and check that they are functional. You may need replacement parts. It is best to obtain these directly from the manufacturer of your well pump.
