Ranunculus reproduces by seeds and root suckers, which can spread throughout the garden. Large holes are created in the lawn by the regrowing buttercups. In the beds, the buttercup robs the other plants of the nutrients.

All you have to do is cut out every buttercup plant. The roots are very strong, so you won't get very far without a rake and digging fork.

Use a day when the soil is nice and damp to remove buttercups. The roots can then be pulled out more easily.

How to get rid of ranunculus in the lawn

Buttercups are a real nuisance in the lawn. If you start fighting too late, you often have no choice but to completely remove the turf. The soil has to be sifted and the lawn has to be completely replanted. So start fighting buttercups as soon as the first plants appear.

Mowing alone doesn't help much. The flowers are cut, but the roots and their offshoots are strengthened at best. Eliminate soil compaction and dig out buttercups:

  • scarify soil in spring
  • Aerate the lawn with a nail roller
  • Loosen soil with earthworms
  • Cut out buttercups
  • pull out roots

Make the ranunculus uncomfortable

Buttercup grows best in acidic soil. One measure to combat this is therefore the application of lime. This makes the PH neutral, which is good for the lawn but not good for the buttercup.

Prevent a ranunculus infestation

Make sure the buttercup doesn't bloom in the first place. Mow the lawn frequently to remove inflorescences.

Always dig up ranunculus in flower beds or the lawn immediately. The longer the plant grows in the ground, the more it spreads.

Destroy ranunculus plant parts by throwing them in the garbage can. Seeds can germinate on the compost. New plants can also grow from small root residues.

Never leave cleared plant parts lying around

Ranunculus is poisonous, especially in the roots and flowers. Do not leave parts of plants lying around so that children and pets cannot poison themselves with them.

It is also better not to touch the buttercup with your bare hands, as the escaping plant sap can cause reddening and so-called buttercup dermatitis on the skin. Better wear gloves.

Unlike red clover, buttercups can also be destroyed with chemical agents. However, this should only be considered as a last resort to destroy the buttercup. Unfortunately, the damage to the environment is considerable.
