The German names of Gazania say a lot about its properties: "Mittagsgold" and "Sonnentaler" - the flowers, which are golden yellow in the wild form and also different colored in hybrids, open at midday, but only on sunny days.

Gazania should be watered with care

Plant the Gazania

In order for the flowers to open, the Gazania absolutely needs a sunny location, which is best also well protected from rain. However, only plant the Mittagsgold outdoors or on the balcony after the ice saints in May, because it is not hardy. The soil should be well drained but still nutritious. You may loosen it up with some sand or grit (€46.95).

Water and fertilize properly

The Gazania tolerates drought better than too much moisture or even waterlogging. Therefore, only water your plants moderately. On the other hand, you don't have to skimp too much on fertilizer when it comes to midday gold. About every one to two weeks you can mix some liquid fertilizer into the irrigation water. Some varieties prefer a somewhat poor soil, they are particularly suitable for rock gardens or for planting on dry stone walls.

Increase the Gazania

Gazania are quite easy to grow from seed. However, you should not collect these from your own plants. As a rule, the garden plants are hybrids that do not form any or only poorly germinable seeds. It is better to buy seeds in specialist shops if you want to propagate Gazania in this way.

Gazania in winter

The Sonnentaler is not hardy and is often sold as an annual summer flower. It is actually perennial and if you have the space for it, you should try overwintering the Gazania. For this, this plant needs a frost-free, bright winter quarters with a temperature between 5 and 10 °C. During the winter it is watered only a little and not fertilized.

The best care tips for the Gazania:

  • sunny location
  • well drained poor soil
  • water moderately
  • fertilize regularly
  • not hardy
  • Overwintering possible
  • do not grow from collected seeds

tips

Be sure to plant your Gazania in a sunny, rain-protected place, otherwise it will not open its pretty flowers.
