Thuja Smaragd is one of the most popular Thuja varieties because of its emerald green color and slender growth. The maintenance is quite easy. What do you have to consider when caring for a Thuja Smaragd?

The Thuja Smaragd is quite easy to care for

Can Thuja Smaragd also be cultivated in a bucket?

Thuja Smaragd can not only be cultivated as a hedge or solitaire in the garden, but also in a sufficiently large bucket. The tree of life then only has to be watered and fertilized more frequently.

How do you water Thuja Smaragd correctly?

Like all trees of life, Thuja Smaragd tolerates neither completely dry nor waterlogged soil. Water regularly, especially in the first few years - even in winter when it has been dry for a long time.

Prevent waterlogging by creating drainage before planting to allow rainwater to drain away.

What should be considered when fertilizing Thuja Smaragd?

On a well-prepared soil, frequent fertilizing is not necessary. As a rule, it is sufficient if you supply the tree of life with conifer fertilizer in the spring. It is even better to give compost and horn shavings (32.93€). A layer of bark mulch is also a good fertilizer.

Use mineral fertilizers with caution. This can very quickly lead to over-fertilization. Fertilizing with Epsom salts is only necessary if the tree of life has been shown to suffer from a magnesium deficiency.

When and how do you prune the tree of life correctly?

Thuja Smaragd mainly grows tall. On the sides, this Thuja variety remains rather slim. Cutting is therefore only necessary in moderation.

Pruning can be done all year round, except on frosty days or when the sun is strong.

Never cut into the old wood, because the thuja will not sprout again there. However, you can shorten the tree of life as you wish.

What diseases and pests do you need to watch out for?

  • root rot
  • dieback
  • Pest infestation (miner moth)

Root rot and shoot death are triggered by fungal infestation. The spread of the fungal spores is favored by dense vegetation and soil with waterlogging. However, fungal infestation can hardly be prevented completely.

The leaf miner only needs to be controlled if the infestation is very severe.

Why does thuja emerald turn brown?

If the needles become dry, it is often because the soil is too dry. But other problems can also lead to brown needles:

  • over-fertilization
  • sunburn
  • road salt
  • pest infestation
  • fungus

The tree of life gets black needles when there is a lack of manganese.

How hardy is the tree of life?

Thuja Smaragd is absolutely hardy as soon as the tree of life has grown well. You should protect very young plants from too much winter sun and, to be on the safe side, put a layer of mulch over the root ball before the winter.

tips

Thuja Smaragd often does not thrive in the hedge and shows many brown spots. The reason for this is often that the tree of life was planted too densely. Thuja Smaragd needs more space for its roots than Thuja Brabant, for example.
