Would you like to transplant a yew tree in the garden? There are a number of things to consider and pay attention to. Above all, you should be aware that this requires a lot of manual work. The easiest way is to transplant a young yew tree. Transplanting is not so easy with older trees.

Is it easy to transplant a yew tree?

Yews are deep-rooters. They form a deep, very extensive, fine root system. This makes them so resistant to drought, lack of nutrients and weather conditions.

The roots of a yew tree can hardly be pulled out of the ground without damaging them. Transplanting is only possible with young yew trees, where the root system is not yet so pronounced.

With older trees, you should think carefully about whether the effort is worth it. If necessary, it makes sense to entrust a professional with this task, as they have the know-how and the necessary gardening tools.

The best season for transplanting a yew tree

In principle, you can transplant a yew tree at any time of the year, except of course in winter when the ground is frozen.

However, the best time is autumn, as the soil moisture is then very high. When transplanting in spring or summer, you will need to water the yew more frequently afterwards.

If you want to transplant a yew tree, you have to dig up the roots without damaging them too much.

Cut out the soil around the tree. Depending on the size of the tree, the distance should be one to two meters. Dig carefully and loosen the soil from time to time with a digging fork so that you don't cut off the roots and can pull them out more easily.

Planting in the new location

Prepare the new location well:

  • Dig a planting hole
  • If necessary, enrich the soil with lime and fertilizer

The planting hole should be twice as large as the root system of the yew. If the soil is very dry, place the yew in a vat of water for 24 hours.
